Trucks in YardAre trucking insurance and auto insurance the same? Yes and no. Similar to auto insurance, trucking insurance costs are based on driving records, age of driver, age of equipment, what is being hauled, the vehicle location and how many claims have been filed in the past. However, trucking insurance has many unique specifications that separate it from auto insurance.

There are several types of trucking insurance coverages:
  • Physical Damage: This insurance covers the truck and trailer. Just as with auto insurance, the premium is based on the value of the equipment. If the truck is damaged in an accident, the damage is covered.
  • Primary Auto Liability: This insurance must be carried by all truckers. Every company must have liability insurance on every single truck, even if leased. This insurance protects the trucker and the company if someone is injured in an accident.
  • Non-Trucking Liability: This insurance covers an accident when the truck or the driver is not under dispatch.
  • Non-Owned Trailer Liability and Physical Damage: These are actually separate types of insurance, but they are similar in that they cover the liability and physical damage a trucker or trucking company might face while pulling a trailer that someone else owns.
  • Cargo Insurance: The cargo a trucker carries needs to be insured against theft, damage, fire etc. Cargo insurance provides that coverage.
  • Terminal Coverage: This insurance coverage will protect the freight if it is stored for a short amount of time. If the freight is stored longer, the trucker will want to have warehouse legal coverage.
