The title of this post is not a reference to the winter weather we’ve been experiencing! Instead, we simply wanted to let you know about Indiana’s Credit Freeze statute so that you are aware this right exists. A credit freeze, also known as a security freeze, is a consumer right provided by Indiana law that allows you to block an identity thief from opening a new account or obtaining credit in your name. Even if a thief has your Social Security number or other personal information, they will be unable to use your identity because no creditor will be able to access your credit report.
While this does create a bit of work when you do need a company to access your credit history, whether that is an insurance company or bank, you will have the peace of mind knowing you’re protected. When you do run into those situations, you can request a temporary lift. The few minutes it takes to lift a freeze is a small price to pay to avoid the hassle of identity thieves causing serious financial trouble for you or a family member. Many states require you to pay a fee each time you lift the credit freeze, but that fee is not permitted in the state of Indiana.
Any Indiana resident can request a credit freeze free of charge. There is no fee for Indiana residents to place, temporarily lift, remove, or request a new password or PIN.
