Heart Drawn in MarkerAllergy season is rough for many people, and allergy medications — both over the counter and prescribed — often don't provide enough relief. Rather than pumping your body full of chemicals that aren't helping, why not try some natural remedies that have helped ease allergy symptoms for thousands of people? Here's how!

Keep Allergens Out of Your House

You can't control the air you breathe in public places, but you can keep your home's air as free of allergens as possible. Keep your home (and car) windows shut and take your shoes off by the door to prevent spreading allergens around your home. If your allergies are particularly bad, replace your air filters with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which trap allergens and dust before they can circulate. You can also set up a few air purifiers around your house to further clean the air.

Flush Your Nose and Throat

No matter how clean your home is, allergens will still bother you if they're trapped in your nasal passages or throat. When you return home, use a neti pot, nasal syringe or a saline spray to flush out your nasal passages. While you're at it, get the tea kettle warmed up, because drinking hot tea soothes scratchy throats. Steep peppermint tea if you need a decongestant or green tea if you need overall allergy relief.

Use the Power of Steam

A hot, steamy shower helps moisten dry nasal passages and break up mucus; it can also clear your body of allergens. Always take a shower after spending time outdoors. Between showers, many allergy sufferers find relief by using a vaporizer or breathing in the steam from boiling water with a towel overhead. Add a drop of eucalyptus oil to your shower or vaporizer to further open your nasal passages.
