RV on the roadFall has set in and many RV owners are ready to tuck their vehicles away until spring. The best place to store your RV will protect it from the elements, like a garage, commercial storage facility or dealership; but your driveway or an RV campground are good backup options. However, you have to prep your RV for the harsh winter cold before putting it into storage mode. Get started with these tips.

  1. Remove your belongings including, linens, clothing, food and everything else that makes the vehicle a home on wheels.

  2. Clean out the interior of the RV, taking care to remove food crumbs from drawers and cabinets to prevent critters from nesting inside.

  3. Defrost the freezer and unplug all appliances.

  4. Leave a few open boxes of baking soda inside the RV to control odors.

  5. Close the blinds to prevent sun bleaching and block off the vents with cardboard and duct tape to keep critters out of the vehicle.

  6. Fill the gas tank and add in fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a few minutes to let it travel through the fuel system.

  7. Change the oil and add antifreeze to the radiator and windshield wiper fluid reservoir.

  8. Add air to the tires until the pressure meets the recommended cold pressure listed in the owner’s manual.

  9. Turn off the LP gas supply valve and the main breaker.

  10. Empty the wastewater tanks and flush out the remaining fluids in the tank drains. Then scrub the holding tanks clean.

  11. Remove the battery and store it in a dry place where it won’t freeze, like a garage. Batteries lose charge while not in use so be sure to periodically charge it up during storage.

  12. And last but not least, protect your RV with a high-quality cover that fits snugly around the vehicle and is made out of a breathable material. Then check the tires.
